Adem (Breath)
Adem (Humpback whale mother and calf)
Medium: Resin
Dimension: 50cm x 19cm x 28cm
Weight: 10 000 g
Limited edition of 15
Humpback whale cow and calf (Megaptera novaeangliae)
Even though these denizens of the oceans are adapted to live their whole life in the blue, like all mammals they have to take their first breath. Clumsy calves are assisted by nurturing mothers to the surface and supported from below. Creating and maintaining that almost intangible connection to a terrestrial past.
Having been raised in a lifestyle that involved being near, next to, on the surface of and sometimes in the ocean, it is inevitable that cetaceans start to occupy a part of your psyche. Magnificent beasts very visibly exhaling or breaching clear of the water, to return below as if they where never there. Centient mammalian counterparts that remain shrouded in mystery. Social interactions amongst family members and conversations through complex songs all hidden beneath the surface.
In a way I created this sculpture in an attempt to make them more tangible, exploring shared attributes through forms that are far removed from our own. Having recently become a parent myself and experiencing and seeing the overwhelming effect of oxytocin at work it was inescapable that I would explore it in my art. The recognizable bond forming between mother and child transcends the species barrier.
